Carlsberg Lunar Festival - euseng-seto

euseng seto

28 Jan 2022, Friday

Euseng Seto, AKA flica, emerging from the developing electronica scene of Kuala Lumpur back in 2007, flica has since released a commendable body of work which had garnered the interest of listeners from outside the insular scene. Debut album Windwane & Window is capricious, twee electronica, one that gained him recognition outside of the country and resulted in the release of sophomore Nocturnal via Tokyo label Schole Records. By third album Telepathy Dreams, flica has shed the saccharine sentimentality of his previous two records in favour of sombre atmospherics – effectively making him a mainstay in the ambient scene.

With 2015’s Weekendary, flica’s music returns to the romanticism that underscored his earlier releases, but with the added flair of moody ambience that characterised its predecessor. It was during the tour in China and Japan that his sonic journey continued; collaborating with bassist Kent Lee, flica applied improvisational live looping in his performances that then helped him develop a new direction to sounds and ideas.

His fifth album sub:side, also fittingly marking his 10th anniversary as an artiste, the album favours a more lo-fi and minimal approach to ambient that seamlessly mixed the oriental with the experimental without sounding overwrought. The decade’s worth of experience has taught flica how to best convey melancholy – with simplicity.

Kelvin Thein

29 Jan 2022, Saturday

My name is Kelvin, I’m a singer/ musician who writes my own songs in the heavy rock genre. I have been playing music as far as i could remember, always enjoying every moment of it when i do. I love creating and writing my own songs, bridging my ideas and my take of music.,specifically in the rock genre. ROCK n’ ROLL with a passion for INNOVATION towards the NEW AGE.

The genre and persona of my music-writing is heavy ROCK, with sub-genres of NEW AGE, THEATER & ELECTRONICA. I also sing and do covers of songs acoustically and band-wise, for performing and entertaining. I am dedicated, hardworking and creatively-driven in what i do, Always maximising my music capabilities for new things and the better. Working very well with people, i am an easy-going person to work with and always up and open for trying out new opportunities and ideas. A world without creation is a world with lesser meaning., that’s what i live by.

EXPERIENCE-WISE,
With all humbleness I have been fortunate enough to have traveled with music, performing in many various shows and places. From the bars of Amsterdam and London, TV programmes and competitions, to amazing festivals with a capacity of 500’000 people. Performing onstage and giving it all is the driving force above anything else. And with these experiences i have molded my persona and style of music, always thinking expansively and writing new music creatively.

Carlsberg Lunar Festival - Orang Orang Drum Theatre

Orang Orang Drum Theatre

29 Jan 2022, Saturday

The Chinese word for “community” (众) is formed with three of the Chinese characters for “people” (人). The notion of “community” is closely tied in with the founding principle of Orang Orang Drum Theatre (OODT)—that art belongs to the people and lives among the people. Through exploring drum theatre of various combinations (of drums, vocals, physical expression, and other theatrical elements), they set out to search for a way to bridge between performing arts and the people it serves.

In 2014, ‘Hidup Ini Senget’ by OODT was nominated in four categories at the 12th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards. It won the ‘Best Music and Sound Design’ and the ‘Best Group Performance’.
This year, their performance of ‘beat now’, ‘bersama-sama’ and ‘we sing we play we feel in the chaotic city’ won them the champion seat in the “Port Dickson Beach Drums and Percussion Challenge 2017”.

In 2017, they released album, ‘LaguKu’ combines drum music with ensemble singing, in an attempt to uncover the deep-rooted power of “drum” and “song”.

Starting with the first piece ‘we sing we play we feel in the chaotic city’, OODT never ceased to seek out the meaning of playing drums. Through combining various materials, musical instruments, and voices, they searched for a harmonized sound.

The dynamic power of drums and the simple charm of songs is what gave rise to the creative impulse behind Orang Orang Drum Theatre.
